Venezuela has announced the extradition to the United States of Alex Saab, one of Nicolás Maduro’s closest collaborators, considering him a key figure in the Venezuelan power structure.
“Venezuela announces the extradition of the Colombian national, Alex Naim Saab Moran, which was carried out on May 16, 2026. The extradition measure was taken considering that this Colombian citizen is involved in several criminal offenses in the United States of America, as is already well known and widely reported by the media,” said the statement from the Venezuelan immigration authority (SAIME).
Meanwhile, according to reports from the Colombian newspaper “El Tiempo,” the Colombian-Venezuelan businessman was taken from El Helicoide prison in Caracas and then transferred to South Florida in the United States.
Some international observers link this development to investigations and judicial proceedings involving the close circle of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, which are being pursued by American justice. According to them, the potential testimony of Alex Saab could be highly important in uncovering financial and operational networks connected to the “chavista” regime.
Additionally, his extradition is seen as a significant development in international investigations into the main figures of the former Venezuelan dictator and their close circle.
