The loss to Fiorentina has shook the foundations of the Juventus set-up and questioned the entire project of the club looking towards next season. From difficult times to a real moment of crisis, this result has sparked a lot of conversation throughout the club and beyond the white line regarding where it is all heading and what could change, to return Juventus to their former glories.
There has been strong indications from former Juventus legend and executive Giorgio Chiellini stating that the gap between this season and the Champions League could trigger changes in the next few months. The standard for a club such as Juventus not competing in the elite European club competition is simply not acceptable, and this quote has underlined the notion that nobody, not even the person sitting in the dug-out, is untouchable.
The focal point of these concerns is Luciano Spalletti, the man in the dug-out, and the uncertainty regarding the long-term future at the club seems to be immense, especially since only a couple of months ago he was tying down a deal to keep him at the club until 2028; a sign of commitment and faith by both parties to stay at the project.
Spalletti himself has admitted that the results have put pressure on him and that he has questioned his own place within the club, a worrying statement for a man tied down on such a long term contract.
It is also being reported that Spalletti has been seeking greater sporting independence from Juventus and wants the backing and support from the club’s board before being fully committed to the future of the project and to what would have to change for Spalletti to stay.
The two are seemingly miles apart and should both parties end up calling it quits a surprise departure of Spalletti, with a return for Antonio Conte now becoming a real prospect for the Old Lady; the coach who is set to leave Napoli, is seemingly being eyed up by the board in Turin for a second spell at the club he enjoyed great success in between 2011-2014 winning three successive Serie A titles.
A move back to Turin for Conte would really fire up the Italian football world.
